Ready to Fish Lake Michigan? Here's What You're Most Likely to Catch

Lake Michigan is a fisherman's paradise. This great lake is full of fish, and there are many different species to catch. If you're looking to reel in a big one, then you'll want to know which fish are biting. Here are the three most popular fish species caught in East Grand Traverse Bay Lake Michigan: Smallmouth bass, lake trout, and chinook salmon.

Smallmouth Bass

The smallmouth bass can be found in many different areas of the lake, and they're relatively easy to catch.

If you're fishing for smallmouth bass, then you'll most likely catch them near the shoreline or in shallow waters.

The best time to catch smallmouth bass is usually early in the morning or late in the evening, when the sun isn't as strong.

You'll want to use live bait, such as minnows or worms, and cast your line near where you think the fish are hiding.

Smallmouth bass are typically aggressive eaters, so it won't take long before you feel a bite.

Once you've hooked a fish, be careful not to pull too hard on the line, or you may lose your catch.

With a little patience and luck, you'll be able to bring in some nice sized smallmouth bass from Lake Michigan.

Lake Trout

One of the most popular fish to catch in cold water is the lake trout. They are known to prefer deep water but can be taken in more shallow depths during spring and fall.

Most of the time, people use spoons, flies, and cowbells near the bottom when trying to catch these fish.

They are a very fun fish to catch because they put up such a fight when being reeled in. Although they are typically found in cold water, they can be caught in warmer waters on occasion. If you're looking for a great challenge, then try your luck at catching a lake trout.

Chinook Salmon

If you're looking to snag a Chinook salmon on Lake Michigan, then you'll want to target them from July 4th through the 3rd week of August. This is when anglers typically have the most success in boating Chinooks.

Although you may be able to catch more numbers of Coho salmon, the Chinooks will definitely be larger in size.

Mature Chinooks typically weigh between 12 and 20 pounds, but some Kings can get up to 30 plus pounds.

So if you're looking for a trophy fish, then aim for a Chinook salmon during this peak time period.

Fishing Lake Michigan

Now that you know a little bit more about the most popular fish in Lake Michigan, it's time to get out there and start fishing! Remember to always be respectful of the environment and other fishermen, and most importantly, have fun! East Bay is a great place to fish, so make sure to take advantage of all this area has to offer. Who knows, you might just end up reeling in the catch of a lifetime. Happy fishing!
